The fire broke out Wednesday afternoon in a remote area of South Lake Tahoe on the east side of the lake, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said. The fire broke out on a ridge separating the South Lake Tahoe resort from the recreation area where a U.S. Forest Service campground was evacuated. CAL Fire reported that it was 80 percent contained, but firefighters also issued an evacuation order for the area north of Lake Elsinore and south of the Fall River.
