Travelers heading to South Lake Tahoe over the next two weeks will have to brace for diversions as a section of Interstate 50 is closed for two weeks and a month due to construction work. Bay Area drivers traveling to and from Southlake Tahoe this fall will have to take a long detour as the highway between Placerville and Echo Summit is closed south of the lake. Caltrans is closing Interstate 50 between Echo and Summit for bridge work in both directions until October 2. A date for the full closure has not yet been announced, so motorists from Plumerville or South Lake Tahoes will have to find an alternative highway to the 50 for about two days and then another two to three weeks.
Traffic to and from South Lake Tahoe is being diverted east to Sacramento and west to San Francisco.
